Where you’ll stay

Two homes on one jungle hillside above the bay. Your group gets the whole place to yourselves — we never book the upstairs and the casita at the same time. These are our regular rates, any time of year — the Island Escape above is the special deal when it’s running.

The blue main house on tall stilts with its wide wraparound deck, set in the green hillside above the bay

The Main House — Upstairs

3 bed · 3 bath · sleeps up to 8 · huge balcony · groups of 4+

A queen bed in the master suite and two full beds in the Jack-and-Jill suite, plus an optional sofa bed and queen air mattress in the living room. Cook in the full kitchen, then live out on the big balcony above the canopy.

$300 per night for the first 4 guests · 4-person minimum · +$20 per extra guest per night (max 8) · 3-night minimum stay

The casita's private wooden porch with chairs, surrounded by jungle

The Casita — Down the Hill

Studio style · private porch · 2–3 adults, or 2 adults + 2–3 kids

Your own little blue house tucked into the garden, a short path down from the main house. Studio-style and self-contained, with a private porch made for slow mornings and toucan sightings.

$100 per night — one flat rate for the whole casita · 2-night minimum stay

One group at a time. Whether you book the casita or the upstairs house, Toucan Bay is yours alone for your stay — no other guests, no shared spaces with strangers.

See Toucan Bay from above

Can’t picture the place yet? Take the overhead tour — two short drone flights over the property, filmed right here on Isla Popa. Press play and fly in from the bay, then look straight down on the red roofs, the garden paths and the dock below.

The fly-in

About 1 minute · from over the water

Start out over the bay and come in the way our boats do — mangroves below, the dock at the water’s edge, and the blue house waiting on top of the hill.

The overhead pass

About 30 seconds · straight down

The whole property in one look — the main house and the casita with their red roofs, the paths winding through the gardens, and jungle on every side.

Eat family-style with us

No menus to argue over and no boat ride into town for dinner — add home-cooked meals to your stay and eat the way families here do: one set menu, cooked fresh, and served in big shared dishes for the whole table.

A taste of the table — a Panamanian sampler on a banana leaf: ropa vieja, seasoned rice, patacones, yuca and carimañolas.

One meal plan, zero decisions. Every meal is a single set menu for your whole group — whatever is fresh and cooking that day — brought to the table family-style so everyone digs in together. It’s the easiest way to feed a crew of hungry explorers, and it’s how we eat ourselves.

  • Local island cooking — Caribbean Panamanian favourites made from what’s fresh: the day’s catch, chicken, coconut rice, patacones, beans and garden produce
  • The full day, covered — breakfast, a packed lunch to go for days out adventuring, and dinner. Add a single meal, a full day’s worth, or cover your whole stay (breakfast is already included with the Island Escape)
  • Served up on the balcony — big shared dishes in the middle of the table, seconds encouraged, and no washing up for you
  • Tell us your needs — allergies, vegetarian, or picky little eaters: mention it when you book and we’ll plan the set menus around your crew

The Bocas del Toro Immersion Club

Our own bilingual children’s book series — written and published right here on Isla Popa, and made for families who learn by going.

Worldschooling families don’t pause learning when they travel — the trip is the lesson. That’s exactly who these books were made for, and it’s no accident they were born here: Toucan Bay hosts traveling and homeschooling families all season long, and the series grew out of the questions their kids asked on our dock.

Every book is set in the real places your family will explore with us — the mangroves, the coral reefs, the cacao farms, Monkey Island. Kids meet the famous red frog in a story in the morning and spot one on the trail that afternoon. English and Spanish run side by side on every page, so a second language gets absorbed inside the adventure, and the maps, field notes and journal pages turn boat days into fieldwork.

Bring them on the plane, work through them on the balcony, then go find everything in real life. Book direct with us and the books are on us — a free digital download of the Bocas del Toro Immersion Club books comes with your booking, and a real paperback copy is waiting for the kids when they arrive at Toucan Bay. A portion of every sale supports the schools of Isla Popa.

How the books plug into your stay

  • Read it, then live it — the reefs, frogs, sloths and cacao in the books are the same ones on our tours
  • Bilingual on every page — English and Spanish together, so kids pick up real phrases they’ll use in the village
  • Built for fieldwork — explorer passports, island maps, field notes and journal pages made to be filled in on the go
  • A free night inside — every book includes a coupon for one free night at Toucan Bay with every 4 nights booked

Cooking class with the ladies of the community

In-house at Toucan Bay · hands-on · kids welcome

Some of the best cooking on the island happens in home kitchens — so we brought the kitchen to you. Spend a session cooking side by side with the women of our Isla Popa community, learning the dishes their families have made for generations, then sit down together and eat what you’ve made.

  • Hands-on from the start — mix, roll and shape tortillas by hand, and stir the big pots as they bubble
  • Real island recipes — the same food our families eat every day: fresh, local and made from scratch
  • In the kitchen or over the fire — cook at the stove, or the traditional way outdoors over open flame
  • Finish at the table — share the meal family-style with the women who taught you
  • 100% goes to the ladies — every dollar you pay for the class goes straight to the women who teach it. We take nothing

Classes are arranged around your stay — message us for dates & pricing, and tell us about any dietary needs.

Ask about the cooking class

Three of our experiences belong entirely to our neighbors: the village walk, lobster hunting with a local guide, and the cooking class with the ladies of the community. 100% of what you pay for them goes straight to the local families who lead them — we take nothing. Our only reward is the satisfaction of helping local families and connecting you with the people who make Isla Popa what it is.

Run a retreat? Bring your group to Toucan Bay

If you lead yoga, wellness, creative or learning retreats, Toucan Bay was practically made for it — a private jungle property on the water that hosts one group at a time, with the boats, the bodywork and the island days already in place.

Aerial view of the blue main house on stilts, its long shared deck running the full length of the building above the green hillside
The main house and its long, shaded deck — your group’s gathering space above the canopy.

The whole property is yours. We never book two groups at once, so your retreat has Toucan Bay to itself. The main house sleeps up to 8, and the casita down the hill makes a natural retreat-leader’s quarters — close to the group, with its own porch and privacy when you need to recharge.

  • Room to gather — the huge balcony and deck are made for morning practice, workshops, circles and long group meals above the trees
  • Wellness built in — on-site massage & holistics in six styles, and everyone staying at Toucan Bay gets the 20% guest rate
  • Excursion days handled — our private boat leaves from the dock: waterfall hikes, Monkey Island, snorkeling at Coral Cay and the whole tour menu can be woven into your schedule
  • Real local connection — village life, culture and seriously good local food, plus a portion of proceeds supporting the schools and community of Isla Popa

Tell us your dates, group size and the kind of retreat you’re dreaming up — we’ll help you shape the stay, the boat days and the downtime around it.

Your stay gives back to Isla Popa

Isla Popa isn’t just where we live — it’s the community that welcomed us in and made this place home. That’s why a portion of the proceeds from every stay goes directly to bettering the local community: supporting the island’s schools, its children, and the projects its people are building for their future. When you book with us, you’re not just passing through — you’re part of that.

Una parte de lo que pagas por tu estadía llega directamente a Isla Popa — apoyando a las escuelas locales, a los niños y a los proyectos de la comunidad.
